Our Story
Shomrim Toronto was founded in 2021 in response to an increase of antisemitism and violence within the Jewish community across the Greater Toronto Area. We were founded to improve the public safety and security of our community: how to effectively protect community members while also working to directly support law enforcement within our communities.
In May 2021, as tensions rose in the Middle East and antisemitic hate crimes surged in Toronto and worldwide, Avi and a group of concerned community members founded Shomrim Toronto. Their mission was to combat antisemitic incidents and provide comfort to those targeted. Through Avi’s efforts, funding was secured to hire an outside security company for a 48-hour patrol of the Jewish community during a critical holiday. As Shomrim Toronto evolved and grew, they established themselves as a vital resource, meeting with politicians, law enforcement representatives, and offering their assistance in various security and emergency response initiatives.
